academia | daniel messelken [2009-2025]
From november 2009 to october 2025 I worked at the Ethics Centre of the University Zurich as a postdoctoral researcher on Military Medical Ethics. Since its establishment in 2014, I was leading the ZH Center for Military Medical Ethics.
I withdrew from the project after 16 years because, as I saw it, administrative constraints too heavily restricted its potential for progress and development.
The research in the center focused on medical ethics in military and humanitarian contexts, e.g. war, conflict, and disasters.
Annual academic workshops were organized on topical issues in that field and results are published.
Annual summer schools invited military health care personnel from all over the world to initate them to (military) medical ethics.
The center and its research were financed by the Swiss Armed Forces' Medical Services Directorate (Centre of Competence for Military and Disaster Medicine) and organized in cooperation with the International Committee for Military Medicine (ICMM).
I was also Scientific Coordinator at ICMM Center of Reference for Education on International Humanitarian Law and Ethics and their Chief Ethics Teacher.
